Understanding Payment Gateway Fees & Interchange Economics

Comprehensive guide to credit card processing fees, flat-rate pricing models, and cross-border currency conversion surcharges.

💳 How Credit Card Processing Fees Work

Every time a customer completes a checkout using a credit or debit card, the payment transaction passes through a complex ecosystem comprising the merchant bank, card network (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), and the issuing bank. The total fee deducted from your merchant payout consists of three distinct components:

  • Interchange Fee: Set directly by Visa and Mastercard, paid to the card-issuing bank.
  • Assessment / Network Fee: Paid directly to the card brand network for routing the transaction.
  • Processor Markup: The profit margin charged by payment gateways like Stripe, PayPal, or Square.

⚖️ Flat-Rate vs. Interchange-Plus (IC+) Pricing

Most modern payment gateways (including Stripe, PayPal, Square, and Shopify Payments) operate on a blended flat-rate model (e.g. 2.9% + $0.30). Under flat-rate pricing, you pay the exact same percentage regardless of whether the customer uses a premium rewards credit card or a low-cost regulated debit card.

High-volume businesses processing over $80,000 per month can often negotiate Interchange-Plus (IC+) pricing. IC+ pricing passes through exact card network interchange costs plus a fixed transparent markup (e.g., Interchange + 0.15% + $0.10), typically reducing processing costs by 20% to 40%.

🌐 Cross-Border Surcharges & Currency FX

Accepting payments from international buyers introduces additional fee layers. Gateways charge an international card surcharge (ranging from +1.0% to +1.75%) on cards issued outside your home jurisdiction.

If the customer pays in a foreign currency requiring exchange into your settlement currency, payment processors levy a currency conversion fee (typically +1.0% to +3.0%). Combining international card fees with FX markups can raise total processing losses to over 5.5% on cross-border transactions.

🛍️ Merchant of Record (MoR) Platforms

Platforms like LemonSqueezy operate as full Merchants of Record. Rather than acting strictly as payment processors, MoR platforms assume legal responsibility for calculating, collecting, and remitting global sales tax, GST, and VAT across 100+ countries on your behalf.

While MoR rates (e.g. 5.0% + $0.50) are higher than standard gateway rates, they eliminate tax filing overhead, chargeback management costs, and international entity incorporation requirements for software sellers and digital creators.
